These houses were at one time inhabited, but now they are just showpieces; more modern houses are built behind them to house the family. These are matriarchal societies and therefore much of their culture focuses on the female. For example, there are two ladders leading to the porch: one for males and for visitors, and one, decorated with styilized wooden carvings of breasts, for the women of the household.
